Self-care and resilience in midwifery

Self-care and resilience in midwifery

Introduction

Resilience is important for midwives in the current climate of the NHS. With the rise in birth rates, shortages in staff and the negative cultures that are sometimes seen, midwives can be subjected to stress that can affect their passion for midwifery (Hunter and Warren 2014).

Learning aims and objectives

This resource aims to provide self-care advice that midwives can use to improve their resilience at work. An improvement in the wellbeing of staff can enable women and families to place trust in their midwife and improve the overall satisfaction with their care. Assessment questions will be used for the reader to reflect upon their learning and help them develop skills in self-care and resilience.

Keywords and linking topics

Resilience, self-care, positivity, wellbeing, morale

Activities and questions at the end of this resource will enable you to assess your knowledge and reflect on how you can incorporate it into your own practice. In the following questions, please select the answer that you believe to be correct. This will be marked and then you can move on to the next question. If you wish, at the end you can return for a further attempt at the questions.

Upon completion of the module, you will be able to download and save or print a certificate to include in your CPD/revalidation portfolio.
